Welcome to the First Indigenous Child Care Center in Waterloo Region!

Hey there, young readers! I’ve got some exciting news for you – a brand new daycare center is about to open in Waterloo Region, and it’s unlike any other you’ve seen before. In just a week and a half, this special daycare will welcome 61 new child care spaces, with a focus on connecting families to traditional teachings.

A Place for Indigenous Children to Thrive

Imagine a place where 15 toddlers can play, learn, and grow while keeping Indigenous culture top of mind. This daycare center aims to undo the harm caused by residential schools, where culture was stripped away and children were forced to assimilate. The goal here is to put it all back – to celebrate Indigenous identity and heritage.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony for this groundbreaking center took place recently, marking a new chapter in childcare for Indigenous children in the region. Located in South Cambridge, this center is participating in the federal $10 a day program and is managed by the Healing of the Seven Generations organization.

Celebrating Cultural Teachings

What sets this daycare apart is its focus on cultural teachings and language. Instead of following a prescribed curriculum, the center will let the community guide the path for their children’s learning. This means that children will have the opportunity to connect with their roots and heritage in a meaningful way.

For parents like Savannah Martin, having a space where her kids can be true to themselves is incredibly important. She understands the struggles of those who grew up without their Indigenous identity and wants to ensure her children have a strong foundation in their heritage.
