Stay Safe While Traveling: A Story of Food Poisoning in the Dominican Republic

Picture this: David and Joanne were all set for their trip to the beautiful Dominican Republic on December 30th. Little did they know that this holiday would be like no other they had experienced before.

A Sudden Turn

As they settled in and explored the resort, they decided to have a meal at the Mongolian restaurant. But what followed was unexpected – severe food poisoning! Joanne recalls, “I had pains in my stomach and then I started feeling really nauseous. I was violently vomiting. It came upon from nowhere.”

They were among eight people in their group who fell ill after dining at the restaurant. Both of them were bedridden for 24 hours. Joanne emphasizes, “It’s probably one of the more common risks when going overseas, but in rare situations, it can turn serious and even deadly.”

Staying Vigilant

Joanne was concerned about the lack of serving utensils at the resort’s buffets, leading to people using their own forks or hands to serve themselves. This raised the risk of contamination and further illness.

Dr. Marco ERX advises bringing along common medications like anti-nausea and getting travel health insurance before embarking on such journeys. It’s crucial to be cautious about the water you drink and the food you consume in tropical destinations to avoid falling prey to sickness.

Remember, speaking to a travel healthcare provider before your trip can always be a good idea, especially if you’re heading to unfamiliar places with endemic illnesses. Stay safe, be prepared, and enjoy your travels without any health setbacks!
