A Flood and an Emergency Evacuation

It all started on a regular Sunday morning. Keith bid goodbye to his mother, leaving her at the Maple View Terrace on Horton Street. Little did he know that just a few hours later, he would receive a call from her saying that the place had flooded due to a burst sprinkler pipe on the top floor. The London Fire Department had to step in for an emergency evacuation.

Oxford Living, the operator of Maple View Terrace, mentioned that 74 people were affected by the flood. Families were in a frenzy, coming and going, trying to retrieve their loved ones’ belongings and find temporary accommodations.

A Brave Rescue and Uncertain Future

One of the residents, 92-year-old Winnie Vandenbos, shared her harrowing experience of being rescued from her fifth-floor apartment by firefighters. She described how they used a special chair and belts to carefully bring her down step by step.

Despite the efforts of restoration and repairs beginning at Maple View Terrace, residents and families are still left in limbo, not knowing when or if they will be able to return. The uncertainty of the post-pandemic world adds an extra layer of complexity to their situation.
