The Middle Class Struggle: How Taxes and Corporations are Squeezing Us Dry

Hello, my fellow Indians! Have you ever felt like the government is taking more and more of your hard-earned money? Well, you’re not alone. Let me tell you a little story about how the middle class is being squeezed dry, and what we can do about it.

The Popcorn Tax Fiasco

Last month, the Finance Minister announced some new tax rates after a GST Council meeting. And guess what? Popcorn got dragged into the mix. Non-branded popcorn was taxed at 5%, branded popcorn at 12%, and caramel popcorn at a whopping 18%. Can you believe it? People on social media started poking fun at the Finance Minister, calling her ‘Vasooli Taai’ and flooding the internet with memes. It’s good that people are waking up to these issues, but the problem runs much deeper than popcorn taxes.

The Middle Class Crunch

The real problem lies in the shrinking middle class. Companies like Hindustan Unilever are seeing a drop in profits because urban growth is slowing down. FMCG companies across the board are feeling the pinch because middle class folks just don’t have the money to spend anymore. The rich are getting richer, while the middle class is getting squeezed. But who’s really to blame?

Some CEOs love to blame the middle class for not working hard enough. They say we should be working 70, 80, even 90 hours a week to get ahead. But the truth is, it’s not our fault. Indian corporations are raking in huge profits, while our salaries remain stagnant. Inflation is rising faster than our paychecks, and the government is giving tax breaks to big companies instead of investing in public services.

Finding a Way Forward

So what can we do about it? We need to educate ourselves about these issues and demand change. By supporting policies that benefit the middle class, we can create a more equitable society for all.
