My Filmmaking Journey: Gear, Tips, and Tricks Revealed!
Filmmaking is messy, my friends. It’s never a straight line, always a winding road with unexpected twists and turns. And let me tell you, it takes a lot of thought to get it right. So, here I am, ready to spill the beans on the gear I use and the lessons I’ve learned over my 12-year filmmaking adventure.
The Best Camera Isn’t the One You Have, It’s the One You Master
Let’s start with the most important thing – the camera. The Canon C200 is my go-to for client work and documentaries. It’s a powerhouse with XLR inputs, ND filters, and easy-to-work-with 4K files.
For my vlogs, I trust my trusty Sony A7R II. It’s lightweight, small, and has fantastic autofocus – essential for capturing those candid moments.
Lenses are Your Best Friend
Investing in quality lenses is key. You don’t need every lens out there, just a few versatile ones that fit your needs. Prime lenses, like my Canon 24mm f/1.4, are great for low light and sharp images.
Remember, the new camera on the block may look tempting, but if your old faithful is still doing the job, stick with it. It’s not about the latest tech, it’s about what works for you.
Audio Matters More Than You Think
Audio is half the battle in filmmaking. For interviews, a boom mic like the Sennheiser MKH 416 is a game-changer. And remember, placement is key – get it close to your subject for the best sound quality.
Lighting Sets the Mood
My trusty Light Panel Astra is a solid choice for professional lighting. But for budget filmmakers, a simple paper lantern can work wonders and give you that soft, even light you need.
Editing Woes and Other Challenges
Filmmaking isn’t all rainbows and butterflies. It’s a rollercoaster of missed shots, forgotten interviews, and last-minute changes. But you know what? It’s all part of the fun.
So there you have it, my friends – a glimpse into my filmmaking journey, gear, and tips. If you’re passionate about filmmaking like me, don’t let the challenges scare you off. Embrace them, learn from them, and keep pushing forward.
