Asteroids, or Planetoids as they’re sometimes called, are like big ol’ rocks floating in space. They range from teeny tiny to massive monsters, like the giant Ceres. Most of them chill out in the space between Mars and Jupiter, in the Asteroid Belt. Not as close as you think!

Sometimes these asteroids wander off and become Near Earth Objects, or NEOs. They can be asteroids, comets, meteors, meteorites, or meteoroids. Sounds scary, but let me break it down for you.

Comets are the real troublemakers, traveling super fast and giving us less warning time compared to asteroids. Remember that flick “Don’t Look Up”? It shows how a comet can suddenly show up and boom! Disaster strikes.

Now, there’s this thing about asteroids – the risk list. Yep, space agencies keep track of the dangerous ones. But here’s the good news – Earth’s defense system is top-notch. We’ve got some kickass projects keeping an eye out for potential threats.

And hey, if we do find a problem asteroid, we’ve got plans to deal with it. From nudging it off course to using solar power to push it away, we’ve got tricks up our sleeves. Even the idea of using nuclear means is on the table, though it’s a bit controversial.
